Blower Door Testing: A process used by professional energy auditors to determine the net free ventilation of a house. (Air Leak Ratio). Blower door tests performed by professional energy auditors help determine a home's air tightness and establishing the proper building tightness is necessary due to the following reasons:

How Does The Blower Door Tests Work :
A blower door is a powerful fan which is mounted to an exterior door. As the fan pulls air out of the house, the air pressure inside reduces. The higher outside air pressure then flows in through all unsealed cracks and openings.
The Blower doors consist of a frame and flexible panel which fits to the doorway. It also consist of a variable-speed fan, a pressure gauge to measure the pressure differences inside and outside the home, and an airflow manometer and hoses for measuring airflow.
Preparing your home for a blower door test:
• Close windows and open interior doors
• Thermostats on heaters and water heaters should be turned down
• Ashes in wood stoves and fireplaces should be covered with damp newspapers
• Shut fireplace dampers, fireplace doors, and wood stove air intakes.
