Home Energy Audit Cost in New Orleans: What Each Tier Really Delivers

Short answer: it ranges from free to several hundred dollars, and the difference between those two options is not marketing. It is whether anyone actually measures anything. Here is what each tier costs, what you get, and how to work out which one your house needs.

The three tiers, and what separates them

Energy audits are not one product. There are three recognised levels, and the gap between them is the depth of diagnostic equipment involved.

What actually drives the price

• Square footage and number of storeys. More envelope means more testing time.
• Number of HVAC systems. Each system needs its own duct leakage test.
• Crawl space or raised foundation. Common across New Orleans and the Northshore, and it adds inspection time under the floor. Worth doing properly given how much moisture moves through those spaces.
• Gas appliances. Combustion safety testing is an added step and it is not optional if you have them.
• Thermal imaging. Some providers charge separately. Ask whether it is included.

When free is genuinely enough

It is enough when your home is relatively new, you have no comfort complaints, and you mainly want to know which rebates you qualify for.

When you should pay for the full diagnostic

Pay for it when you have a symptom nobody has explained. A walk-through tells you what a trained eye can see. A blower door test tells you a number.

Specifically, pay for the diagnostic if:

• Rooms are uneven. One room ten degrees off the rest is almost always duct or envelope, and guessing which is expensive.

• You are about to spend real money. If a $6,000 insulation job is on the table, spending a fraction of that to confirm it is the right $6,000 is straightforward arithmetic.

Does it pay for itself?

It pays for itself when it changes a decision. That is the honest framing.

The most expensive mistake in this trade is buying the wrong measure. The classic version: a homeowner adds R-49 over an attic floor that was never air sealed. They spend thousands, the bill barely moves, and in a humid climate they have now given warm wet air a path into a cavity where it can condense.

An audit that catches that before the work happens has paid for itself several times over on a single decision. If it only confirms what you already knew, it cost you a few hundred dollars for certainty before a much larger spend.

Questions worth asking before you book

1. Is a blower door test included, or extra?
2. Do you test duct leakage separately from envelope leakage?
3. Is thermal imaging included?
4. Do I get a written report with prioritised recommendations, or a verbal summary?
5. Is the audit fee credited against the work if I proceed?
6. Are you testing to a recognised standard, and are the technicians certified?

Then what

An audit is a diagnosis rather than a cure. What normally follows, in the order the numbers usually justify:

1. Air sealing. Cheapest, largest measured effect, and it has to come first.
2. Duct sealing or repair. Ducts in a 130°F attic leak conditioned air into a space you are not trying to cool.
