    What is a Roof Coating?

A roof coating is a monolithic fluid applied to a roof that has elastic properties that allow flexibility and elasticity. It is the top layer of a composite roof membrane that receives both infrared precipitation and UV rays from the sun.
It is waterproof for substrates but it cannot withstand other forms of heavier pressure the way deck coatings applied on roads can.

Deck coatings and roof coatings are two different things and they are often confused by many. The former is designed for waterproofing areas for pedestrian traffic.

There are two main purposes of white roof coatings:

    • To protect the roof : Roof coatings are a protective layer that can solve roof leaks on any kind of roofing material. They provide protection from the sun’s heat and UV rays. It also helps to protect the roof from prematurely breaking down from the intensity of solar heat. Roof coating can extend the lifespan of your roof by an additional 25 years.
    • To reflect solar radiation – Radiant Barrier : Studies show that roof coatings increase building efficiency. Because of its insulating and reflecting effects, it can lower rooftop temperatures and thus reduce the energy required from your HVAC system. White coating is not usually reflective if not for its top coat. So, with time, the reflectivity of the white roof coating disappears. Maintenance must be conducted every 3-7 years.

    Binders, Pigments, and Liquid Carriers

Binders are composed of organic or silicone compound. These are polymers that give the roof coating its elastic and tensile properties. Common elastomers used as binders in white roof coatings include acrylic, rubber, urethane, and vinyl. The titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are common pigments that give the roof coating its white color.

Today, coatings are mostly water-based that is also known as latex. The water in latex serves as the carrier of the liquid. Reactive coatings use organic solvents as carrier.

White Roof Coating is compatible with any type of roof

White coatings can be applied to any type of roofing material. It can be used on polyurethane, metal, rubber, or even bitumen roofs. Other than white roof coating we also have other recommended spray foam insulation services in New Orleans that we currently offer our clients such as Cellulose fiber insulation, open cell insulation and many more.

    Primers and Application on Surfaces

Primers are important for keeping the roof surface and coating together like a glue so that it sticks nicely to the material. For best results, it must be applied on clean surfaces. Surface preparation is so important it must not be dispensed with.

The coating can be applied by brushing, airless spraying or rolling.

Most white roof coatings are waterproof but there are those that are not. It depends on the material; if it is acrylic, it is breathable and permeable. Butyl and neoprenes have very low permeability so these are the types that can resist transmission of moisture.

    Elastomeric Coating

The primary advantage of Elastomeric coating is its ability to fix roof and other types of leaks. It can stretch and contract easily depending on the outside temperature.

    Kinds of Elastomeric Coating:

    • Butyl: This type is best for sloping or flat roofs or sloping. The main advantage of butyl is its superior resistance to water pressure. It is one of the best shields against vapor.
    • Acrylic: For over sloped roof, acrylic is best. It is also known to be the most environment-friendly.
    • Polyurethane: This is the type of elastomeric coating best applied on rubber roofs. This material is usually included in paints, varnishes, and foams. It happens to be a plastic material used for shoe soles and sportswear.
    • Silicone Coating Silicone is a permanent coating that is also very popular because it can also be applied to any roofing surface. It has a seamless membrane that protects your roof from even the harshest weather conditions and it does not break or crack. It is also capable in preventing roofs from mold, mildew, and staining.

    Advantages of Silicone Coating:

    1.  It restores your roof – Just like the elastomeric coating, it protects the roof but the silicone coating is said to be more effective than the former. It is designed to fix leaks and even rust.
    2. It protects the roof from the sun better than any other kind of white coating – With spray foam recoat using low solids silicone coating, it can increase the lifespan of the roof and the maintenance can be up to every 10-20 years. That’s double the normal white roof coating.
